By Karen Larter, Fundraising Chair, Canyon Church Camp
As winter approaches, the construction at Canyon Church Camp is wrapping up until spring after getting underway mid-August. The camp looks quite different since we gathered on-site for our 80th Anniversary and ground-breaking in August. It has been an exciting autumn for us! The Camp Board has worked hard for several years to be able to rebuild after the camp was destroyed by the 2017 Kenow Wildfire.
We have made several upgrades to the historic Kate Parry Lodge:
- Entryway with new stairs, a wheelchair ramp, and log pillars
- Electrical wiring upgraded to the current code
- Ceiling fans have been added to the gathering area
- Space heaters have been added to the dish pit
- New mouse-proof electrical wiring has been added in all areas
- Structural upgrades to the dish pit area have begun
Utility infrastructure upgrades include:
- Re-establishing and upgrading potable water and wastewater lines to the current code
- Re-establishing and upgrading propane services
- Moving electrical services underground
- The site has been prepped to have utility services connected in the spring
Renovations to the existing buildings have begun:
- Private washroom (behind boys’ washroom) has new stable stairs with a railing
- Boys’ washroom interior being prepped for redesign and plumbing
- Maintenance cabin accommodation has new windows and is ready to be plumbed including a new sink and toilet
- Cabins 1-3 have had their electrical wiring upgraded
Construction on new buildings has begun:
- Foundations of camper cabins 4-7, staff cabin, cook/caretaker’s duplex, and storage are ready for building
- Girls’ & new private washroom has been roughed in with walls and a roof
- Utility services tie-ins are ready
THANK YOU to our Canyon Church Camp supporters, Parks Canada, and Southwest Design & Construction for support with design and permitting. Thanks, as well, to Elevate Construction for their work behind the scenes helping our committee learn, facilitating our decision making, keeping the process organized, and working on site to get us back to camp!
