Glad Tidings from Medicine Hat Campus Ministry

By Les Pearson, Board Chair
This Epiphany Season is the right time to update you on our ministry’s progress of the Medicine Hat College Ecumenical Campus Ministry. The Board’s “glad tidings” include that beginning in late October and until January 31, 2022, Pastor George Koopmans is serving as Interim Chaplain. During this time frame, he has been on campus to host “Java with George” sessions in the Interfaith Room, serve the soup lunches, and—most recently—provide treat relief to students preparing for December exams. He has also circulated on campus to meet and greet students, faculty and staff. The Board is grateful for the enthusiasm and care that George has displayed.
The College Administration has affirmed that the chaplaincy is a welcome presence on campus, especially during the pandemic with its restrictions and instructional stressors. While George has sustained the presence of a Chaplain on campus, your contributions permit the Board to believe that this ministry is valued and sustainable into future years. Thank you!
A Search Committee, with members from four sponsoring churches and a college representative, are reviewing applications for the permanent position of Chaplain. Interviews will take place this month with a hiring recommendation to the Board on or before January 31.
Our former chaplain, Rev. Kristy Reimers-Loader, left a legacy of support and goodwill during her tenure. But change is an inevitable reality. I am heartened that God has provided for our interim needs. Please pray that the Board will be spiritually guided in the selection of a permanent candidate to replace Kristy.
On behalf of the Board, thank you for Chinook Winds Region and The United Church of Canada’s generous support financially and for your prayers.
