Chinook Winds Region welcomes General Council 45 to Calgary

Close to 500 people are attending The United Church of Canada’s General Council 45 in-person meeting in Calgary from August 7 to 11, 2025. The delegates will gather at the Telus Convention Centre and Knox United Church, Calgary.
        Attendees include commissioners elected from all 16 United Church Regional Councils, guests from our international partners, and 100 youth and young adults will participate in Youth Forum, some of whom are also commissioners. As well, we’re grateful for the crew of some 100 local arrangement volunteers!
      Our Chinook Winds Region commissioners (Central and South Alberta) include: Britta Den Hoed, Red Deer Lake United; Oh Wang Kwon, Stettler & Big Valley-Erskine; Rhondda Gower, Gaetz Memorial; Kathy Yamashita, Southern Alberta Japanese; David Pollard, Fifth Avenue Memorial; Luke Haisa, Central; Vicki McPhee and Hillary Van Spronsen, Symons Valley; Nancy Nourse, Northminster and St. David’s; MiYeon Kim, Fort Macleod-Granum as well as Local Arrangements Chair Sue Brodrick.

How You Can Participate in General Council 45

  • In-person: You’re welcome to attend the Apology to 2S and LGBTQIA+ Communities, the Alvin Dixon Memorial Run and the Installation of the New Moderator. Full details below.
  • Online: The General Council website provides full details of the agenda and business of the five-day in-person meeting. You can follow the livestream on the United Church’s YouTube Channel.  

The United Church of Canada will offer a historic apology to 2S and LGBTQIA+ communities on Friday, August 8, 2025. We invite you to join us in person at Knox United Church in Calgary (9:00 a.m. MT) or via the livestream.

By formally apologizing, the United Church reaffirms its commitment to radical hospitality and full inclusion of 2S and LGBTQIA+ people in all aspects of church life, including leadership, worship, and governance, strengthening the church’s witness to justice and love in action. Read the full news story and register for the Zoom event.

How you can Participate: The fourth Alvin Dixon Memorial Walk/Run is a beloved General Council event you can also participate in on August 10, 2025, 6:30 pm MT starting at Reconciliation Bridge in Calgary’s East Village. It raises funds for Indigenous students to continue their educational journeys. Thank you to Ogden and Red Deer Lake United Church minister Rev. Bill Weaver for organizing the course. Installation of New Moderator on August 11

You’re warmly welcomed to attend the installation of the United Church’s new Moderator on Monday, August 11, 2025 at 7 pm MT. The service takes place at Knox United Church, Calgary. The service will also be live-streamed 
        The 45th General Council will decide who will be its next Moderator by the end of the day, Saturday, August 9. 
        Nominees for moderator include Rev. Dr. John Pentland from Hillhurst United Church, Calgary.
