Since the 2017 Kenow Wildfire, the Canyon Church Camp Board of Directors have been working hard to be able to start re-building the camp which is located within Waterton National Park. Key to the process was securing a Parks Canada License of Occupation.
On December 19, 2022, Canyon Church Camp Board representatives Dr. Kathy Yamahita and Christina Whittmire signed a new License of Occupation from Parks Canada!
Christina Whittmire writes: We were able to negotiate a 21-year license which takes effect on April 1, 2023.
Now the real work begins! Our fundraising team is already hard at work leading a new campaign. The Rebuild Committee will spend January to March getting permits in place and lining up construction companies. We have hired a local project manager to help get us rolling who has experience with Parks Canada and already assisted us a great deal.
The first step in our rebuild will be re-establishing utilities and bringing the current buildings up to code. This includes installing a new septic system which will be a big endeavour!
With the License of Occupation comes the reality that we need more help, both financially and through volunteers. Over the last 5 years, the camp board has worked diligently and faithfully but the stress has taken its toll on our numbers. We could use more bodies on the fundraising committee, the rebuild committee, and the Canyon Church Camp board of directors. We need enthusiastic doers with time to dedicate to this large project. Together we can do this!
