Ogden Hub: 29 – Safe, Supportive, Resilient Community

Ogden Hub 29: Construction of main floor
Construction is underway for Ogden Hub 29. Pictured is the main floor being built.

A new five-story building aimed at providing affordable housing and much-needed community services is going up on the former building site of Ogden United Church, Calgary, AB. It’s scheduled to open in Spring 2023.

It’s taken a lot of work to get to this point, with a lot more effort still to come. Ogden Hub: 29 is a partnership between Ogden United Church and the Mustard Seed. The Mustard Seed has initiated its public fund-raising campaign for the three stories of residential housing. As part of the partnership agreement, Ogden Church will start its public fundraising campaign for the two community service floors after the Mustard Seed campaign is complete. In the meantime, Ogden Church has secured bank financing, is writing grant proposals and is able to solicit internal donations.

The Ogden Hub 29 Basement was dug earlier in 2022.

Back in 2017, Ogden United Church saw the need for a community-purposed building and sought out partners to join them. The Mustard Seed, a Western Canadian non-profit aiming to alleviate poverty and homelessness, was a natural fit. In 2018, an estimated 22 per cent of lone-parent families were living under the poverty line.

“I know a lot of people were struggling before the pandemic and are struggling more now,” says Rev. Bill Weaver, Ogden Church’s minister. “The success of this project [will mean] them realizing that they don’t need to struggle alone. That there are supports, people who care and places they can go to safely work on trying to address real needs.”

Ogden United Church and the Mustard Seed have come together under common goals, believing that everyone deserves shelter, safety and a sense of belonging

Ogden Hub: 29 will feature two and three-bedroom suites for parents and their families. The main floor will include space for community support such as a multi-purpose room that will be used for Ogden United Church worship as well as for community events and classes. A commercial kitchen will offer an integrated approach to meal preparation. There will be a communal rooftop area and playground for residents as well as a daycare and preschool. Please see the video below.

With the former building demolished last summer and construction currently happening on the Ogden site, the Ogden United Church is worshipping together with the neighbouring McDougall United Church. The Ogden church offices are located in the McDougall basement.
