We continue to pray for the protection of the lives and human rights of residents of Ukraine. Our National Church initiated an emergency appeal to support United Church Mission & Service partners responding to the crisis. Funds go towards needs of shelter, clean water, food and medical attention. How to donate HERE:
In Chinook Winds Region, here are a few examples of how communities of faith are responding:
Crossfield (AB) United Church held a special Sunday Service and meal on Sunday, June 26 to raise money towards helping three members of a Ukrainian family who just arrived in Calgary. The family is from Lviv, Ukraine and has ties to the Crossfield Church family. The mother and two children are able to come to Canada and the husband remains in Ukraine. Donations can be mailed to the Crossfield Church. Or contact Rev. David Crawford.
At Acme (AB) United Church, Carol Metzger (at right) made a quilt to honour Ukraine.
Carol also chairs Acme’s Pastoral Care Team and organizes many of the church’s fundraisers and special events.
In March, Vulcan (AB) United Church held a candle lighting for peace in support of Ukraine this past week (See photo above). From Rev. Susan MacDonald: “We opened it to the community by holding it outside. We invited people to come by and light a candle. We had a printed prayer from The United Church of Canada’s website if folks wanted to pray. We also played music of a Ukrainian choir singing prayer hymns.”
